Hammersmith, Middlesex   (Town)

Hammersmith is a metropolitan district in Middlesex, forming a western suburb of London. It lies on the north bank of the River Thames, north-west of Fulham. The settlement developed by the river and along the main road from London to the west (between Kensington and Turnham Green), now the town's main shopping centre. St Paul's Church dates from 1631. The opening of Hammersmith Bridge in 1827 stimulated development on both sides of the river. Hammersmith was a chapelry in the ancient parish of Fulham, before becoming a separate parish in 1834. From 1900-1965, for local government purposes, the parish was the basis of Hammersmith metropolitan borough. The Lower Mall along the river is notable for its historic inns. The district is within the council area of Hammersmith and Fulham.
